Adverb

A preposition governs the noun. An adverb says more about the verb. Some words like down, in etc. can be used as both prepositions and adverbs. However we can make out whether these words are prepositions or adverbs from their functions in the sentences.

Look at the sentences given below:-
Teddy went out of the room.
Teddy went out.
In the first sentence, the word out shows the relationship between the nouns Teddy and the room.
Here out is a preposition.
In the second sentence, the word out says more about the verb went. It answers the question, "Where did the Teddy go?" Here out is an adverb.
